We invite young composers, aged 16-25, to submit a new work to Friends of the Vox.
The competition aims to create a welcoming platform where young composers can experiment, gain valuable feedback and build confidence in their craft, while celebrating the creativity and diversity they can bring to choral music. Through this competition, we hope to inspire a new generation of composers to write for upper voices and to foster lasting connections between young artists, singers, conductors and established composers.
We are very grateful to Vox Anima London for donating the first prize which will provide the overall winner with a once in a lifetime opportunity to be tutored in person by some of the finest choral composers in the world.
The compositions will be adjudicated by James Meaders (Founder and Artistic Director, Vox Anima London), Richard Hammond-Hall (Pianist and Director of Community Engagement, Vox Anima London), and a guest composer (to be announced). The winners will receive individual feedback from the adjudicators. All three prize winners will have their winning entries performed live by Vox Anima Chamber Choir in a choral workshop on Saturday 17 April. The prizes available for the top 3 scores include a free place on Vox Anima London’s Choral Composition Intensive in July 2027, a free 60-minute online coaching session with Dr James M. Meaders, and £100 cash.

The Call – George Herbert
Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life:
Such a Way, as gives us breath:
Such a Truth, as ends all strife:
Such a Life, as killeth death.
Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength:
Such a Light as shows a feast:
Such a Feast, as mends in length:
Such a Strength, as makes his guest.
Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart:
Such a Joy, as none can move:
Such a Love, as none can part:
Such a Heart, as joyes in love.
A Birthday – Christina Rossetti
My heart is like a singing bird
Whose nest is in a water'd shoot;
My heart is like an apple-tree
Whose boughs are bent with thickset fruit;
My heart is like a rainbow shell
That paddles in a halcyon sea;
My heart is gladder than all these
Because my love is come to me.
Raise me a dais of silk and down;
Hang it with vair and purple dyes;
Carve it in doves and pomegranates,
And peacocks with a hundred eyes;
Work it in gold and silver grapes,
In leaves and silver fleurs-de-lys;
Because the birthday of my life
Is come, my love is come to me.
Redbirds – Sara Teasdale
Redbirds, redbirds,
Long and long ago,
What a honey-call you had
In hills I used to know;
Redbud, buckberry,
Wild plum-tree
And proud river sweeping
Southward to the sea,
Brown and gold in the sun
Sparkling far below,
Trailing stately round her bluffs
Where the poplars grow—
Redbirds, redbirds,
Are you singing still
As you sang one May day
On Saxton's Hill?
Ubi caritas - attributed to Paulinus II of Aquileia
Ubi cáritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Congregávit nos in unum Christi amor.
Exsultémus et in ipso iucundémur.
Timeámus et amémus Deum vivum.
Et ex corde diligámus nos sincéro.
Ubi cáritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Simul ergo cum in unum congregámur:
Ne nos mente dividámur, caveámus.
Cessent iúrgia malígna, cessent lites.
Et in médio nostri sit Christus Deus.
Ubi cáritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Simul quoque cum beátis videámus
Gloriánter vultum tuum, Christe Deus:
Gáudium, quod est imménsum atque probum.
Sæcula per infiníta sæculórum. Amen.
